Matarangi lies across the harbour from Whangapoua. Developed as a tourist hotspot in the 1980’s Matarangi is well known for it’s 18-hole Sir Bob Charles championship designed golf course called ‘The Dunes’. With permanent residents counted at 300, and expanding to 7000 during summer, Matarangi has a variety of accommodation from the traditional kiwi bach to an internationally recognised golf resort.

Matarangi, initially developed as a resort town is equidistant from Whitianga and Coromandel town. Fast becoming a popular, but “off the beaten track” life style choice and holiday destination. Matarangi has an active property market directed very much at the golfing and boating fraternity. 

Fishing, Boating and golf.

Situated on the white sandspit opposite Whangapoua Harbour and with Ocean Beach on your doorstep, Matarangi offers a wealth of water activities. Fishing is a popular past time with a new boat ramp that launches into a protected harbour(with a bar). Land based fishing is also very popular with many spots towards Whagapoua as well as between Matarangi and Rings Beach – which is the closest beach to the south end of Ocean Beach.

Walks in the area

Matarangi Bluff Track
Access to the short track is from the end of Goldfields Drive in Matarangi, or from the northern end of Rings Beach. It’s an easy walk up to the cell phone tower. The 4.7km walk loops through replanted native bush which has been part of a popular program for our local schools. This enhancement of native trees and a trapping program has encouraged the return of the endangered Fernbird.

Things To Do In Matarangi

The 4km long Ocean Beach offers easy walks, swimming, and and the seasonal opportunity to learn to surf.

An afternoon well spent is to take a drive south exiting at the southern end of Goldfields Drive on to the beautiful Bluff Rd. The coastline is a delight and Rings Beach is 2kms from Matarangi on Bluff Rd.

Where to eat in Matarangi

Matarangi has a modest but quality selection of café’s and restaurants to suit all tastes and ages. Important to diarise is the annual Taste of Matarangi Food and Wine festival. An event not to be missed as it showcases the local cuisine, food trucks, boutique beer, wine and musical talent of the Coromandel.

Retail therapy in Matarangi includes the local grocery, a golf pro shop – open 7 days a week a liquor store and of course the ever growing property realtors.

Accommodation in Matarangi

There are many online accommodation options as well as a the local golf resort, however the closest camping/holiday park is in Kuaotunu West at the end of Bluff Rd.

Matarangi is 23km’s from Whitianga and Coromandel town. Whitianga being the the hub of economic development in the region also includes the only area school in the Mercury Bay region. Mercury Bay Area School students range from Year1 to Year 13, with a diverse range of subjects and opportunities for learners of all ages.
