Seaweek is New Zealand’s annual celebration of the sea, running from 1-9 March. This year’s theme is “Healthy Seas – Healthy People” (Toi Moana – Toi Tangata). The Department of Conservation (DOC), along with local agencies, trusts, and businesses, is coordinating a week of events, competitions, and marine education to connect people with the moana.
Planned events include:
- 1 March – Community Day Buffalo Beach: Learn about coastal ecosystems with games, prizes, and giveaways.
- 3 March – Hahei, Cathedral Cove & Coast beach clean.
- 5 March – Seaweek at the Cinema: Short film and Q+A evening with marine conservation experts at Mercury Twin Cinemas.
- Through the week – school visits: marine education sessions.
- All week – Design a Seaweek Poster Competition (DOC).
